Smell-o-Vision Coming to PCs by Christmas

ScentScape

It's been a joke (or a prediction) for years that eventually we'd be able to taste and smell TV, movies, and games just as we hear, see, and feel them (even if that last one isn't something most PC gamers are able to do). Soon you will indeed be able to smell the games you're playing thanks to something called the ScentScape.

Made by Scent Sciences Corporation, the ScentScape is described as "an innovative digital scent delivery system." Besides sounding downright fancy, it seems to be pretty easy to use: You simply plug it into a USB port on your computer and, with a supported game, the appropriate scent is released when the time comes. There are 20 "basic scents" included in each replaceable cartridge, among them pine forest, ocean, flowers, and smoke -- so, at least in this version, there's no need to worry about what will happen when wandering into an area akin to The Great Mighty Poo's cave in Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Each cartridge will last 200 hours or more "in heavy use," with the ability to alter the strength of the smell. Though it's only been shown on PC, it's said that it will be "compatible with all major formats."
