A site called Brokelyn, for the recession-affected Brooklyn dweller, has published a "First Person" article entitled "How to survive as a SAHG (stay-at-home-girlfriend)." Hm! OK. It could be a tongue-in-cheek kind of jokey type thing, right? A humorous essay chronicling the silly misadventures of a young woman stepping into more "traditional" domestic duties while her live-in boyfriend is at work and she's looking for a new job. But... it's just not. It's really just not! Let's observe some samples from Quiana Stokes' strange composition. More »

Wed, 23 Feb 2011 02:38:29 -0800 New Twitter Shifts the Car from Neutral into Drive http://didsneds9.posterous.com/new-twitter-shifts-the-car-from-neutral-into-8 http://didsneds9.posterous.com/new-twitter-shifts-the-car-from-neutral-into-8

Twitter:

?Today, we?re introducing a new, re-engineered Twitter.com that provides an easier, faster, and richer experience.?

This is a smart move. It helps them on two fronts: bringing in more brand marketers and newbies.

Twitter had been stuck. They are growing significantly for sure ? but all of it is coming off a small base of active users.

The redesign gives marketers more flexibility in design and newbies a reason to stay longer. This ? over time ? will turn them from passive users into more active ones that tweet.

It?s what they had to do get out of neutral gear.

Tue, 22 Feb 2011 20:38:29 -0800 Microbots can now swim back and forth http://didsneds9.posterous.com/microbots-can-now-swim-back-and-forth http://didsneds9.posterous.com/microbots-can-now-swim-back-and-forth

Until now you can have big elaborate robots or very small microbots but it is very difficult to have both. A blog post from New Scientist (where this video is from) points out the research on microbots, very small machines that will move, navigate and perform simple tasks. The ability to remotely power a microbot, thus eliminating the need for onboard battery or fuel, is already proven and one of the methods is the application of an AC field to a liquid where the robot is located. This microbot is essentially a diode, a one-way electric conductor. The different electric charges at its ends force the neighboring ions to move thus creating a small thrust that propels the bot. The team of Rachita Sharma and Orlin Velev from North Carolina State University developed a method where a controlled application of an additional DC field changes the ion distribution around the microbot and this time the ion field creates a torque that rotates the microbot. The DC field is applied until the completion of a 180-degree turn. Then the microbot moves again, now in the opposite direction. It is only 1.3mm long and as claimed by other scientists like Vesselin Paunov from the University of Hull, UK this arrangement can be further scaled down where it can be useful for diagnostic and localized drug supply applications.

The Winnitron 1000 is an arcade machine that houses indie games you won't find anywhere else, including two-player versions of Canabalt and Super Crate Box. Usually, the only way to experience these games is to visit the machine's home at the LoPub in Winnipeg, but the collective that created it occasionally takes it on tour to events -- like, say, the Game Developers Conference.

As much as we hate to publicize this and increase our own time spent waiting in line, the Winnitron 1000 will be playable at GDC, in booth 1137. That booth will also be home to a series of talks by indie luminaries Vlambeer, Adam Saltsman, Kyle Pulver, Chevy Ray Johnston, and the Indie Game: The Movie crew. We hear you'll be able to hear these talks best from just outside of the Winnitron line.

Tue, 22 Feb 2011 08:38:40 -0800 5 Tips to Remember for Mattress Buying http://didsneds9.posterous.com/5-tips-to-remember-for-mattress-buying-0 http://didsneds9.posterous.com/5-tips-to-remember-for-mattress-buying-0 "My ribs hurt!" "I feel better sleeping on the couch or recliner." "I hate getting into that bed." "I never get a decent sleep, I think the bed needs to be replaced." These are all comments that have been mentioned in my home, more and more often, and I think it's almost time to get a new mattress.

The foam mattress in question is going on it's 6th year and has acquired hills and valleys. A standard mattress should be good for up to 8 years and a premium mattress can be in good shape up to ten years or more. Just like finding a place to live is all about location, location, location. Finding a good mattress is all about comfort, comfort comfort.
Flickr/CC - Krystn Palmer Photography
Now that I have mentally agreed that the bed must be replaced, it is time to research mattresses to get the best quality for my money. There are so many choices; do you go air, foam or spring mattress? And if you do a foam mattress, how thick? How many coils per square foot? Or maybe I should only look at water beds?

Surprising how such a perceived small investment can become confusing. But considering we spend at least 6 - 8 hours of our day in one and need it to make us feel better for the remaining 2/3 of the day, it is a decision we don't want to think cheaply about.

Before I even start laying down on beds for 15 minutes at a time in my favorite sleeping position, I need to determine what mattress is best for my favorite sleeping position.

According to ConsumerReports: "A study published in 2003 in the British medical journal Lancet suggested that people who suffer from lower back pain would benefit from a medium-firm mattress. That made sense to several experts we interviewed. If a mattress is too firm, it won't support the body evenly and may cause discomfort at the heaviest points (hips and shoulders). If it's too soft, a sleeper could sink into the surface and have a hard time moving, which could cause tingling, numbness, or aches."
I sleep on my side and occasionally my stomach and back, so the cushioning of my side of the bed would vary and my partner sleeps in a fetal position or on her side (thanks to 7 back surgeries) and if the bed is too soft she really does have a hard time moving and aches in the morning.

One idea I am looking into is a sleep number bed to adjust it as needed. The downside is that you can't flip the bed around to make it last longer and you start with a higher price mark right away. I just have to remember that a $3000 bed over the course of 8 years is a dollar a night and even less if I bought a foam or inner spring mattress in the $1000 range.

According to consumer reports: "Seventy-eight percent of those who spent more than $4,000 said they were highly satisfied with their purchase. But 66 percent of those who spent less than $1,000 were also highly satisfied."
Some rules to go by when shopping for a bed are based on experience and the consumer "bible", Consumer Reports.

1. Try it out in the store: Before I bought my current bed, I slept on it in the store for about 10 minutes. As weird as it felt sleeping in front of people, it is very well worth the time.

"Seventy-two percent of those who invested at least 10 minutes (for instance, lying down on each side, back, and stomach) were highly satisfied with their mattress purchase compared with 62 percent who didn't."
2. Guarantees, Trials and Fees: Find out what the return policy is, can you return the mattress after a 28 day trial or is it only a 10 day try out? What is the restocking fee or pickup fee if you do return it? One suggestion if you do send it back is to take a picture of it when they pick it up, that way you have proof it is in good condition as they are carting it out if the company gives you flack.

3. Keep up on Sales and Haggle: There are always sales on mattresses and besides comparing prices between stores, also compare prices to their own online site. Sometimes you can use the online price to barter with if it is lower than the store price.
Again consumer reports states: "The suggested retail price of a mattress is pure fiction. Discounts of 50 percent or more are common. In our survey, only 36 percent of respondents tried haggling. Among those who tried, 72 percent got a lower price."
4. Rip the Tag, Rip the Warranty: If you have trial period on a bed and you don't like it after 26 nights, but you have ripped off the tag, the bed is yours to keep. One way to get around the warranty issue below is to use a bed cover for the trial period to keep stains away from the mattress if you should need to return it.
"Some warranties don't cover full replacement value; instead an annual usage charge is deducted from the current retail price.

When you make a claim, the store or manufacturer sends an inspector to your house. You'll need to show a receipt. If you say the mattress has sagged, the inspector checks whether the dip is below the allowable limit, 1 1/2 inches. A company will void a warranty if you remove the "do not remove" tag, if the mattress is soiled, or if it has uneven support from a box spring or frame--a common reason for sagging, says Stan Steinreich, a Simmons spokesman."
5. Read Reviews: Once I have things narrowed down to one or two types of beds I like to read the reviews of them. People are always more willing to give up information on how bad things are, so I try to take in the complaints in the light that some things may be more personalized. But an overall continuous complain on structure would draw me in.

Overall, I think I have what I need and it is just a matter of going out in person to test them out. I'll put on some comfy clothes and slip-on shoes to make it a nice experience as I figure out what is comfortable.

Tue, 22 Feb 2011 05:39:11 -0800 Bing Trends: Top football search trends http://didsneds9.posterous.com/bing-trends-top-football-search-trends-4 http://didsneds9.posterous.com/bing-trends-top-football-search-trends-4

Which player would you most like to watch the big game with? Who was the best looking player on the field this season? What are the odds that you’ll be eating Buffalo wings on Sunday? Which city’s team was searched most often?

Ahead of Sunday’s game, we delved into the search data and conducted a survey to find out.

What’s more, we created an infographic to bring the stats to life. Click on the image to see full screen and download.

Top Football Search Trends: We looked at the most popular search terms associated with pro football over the course of the season. Here are some the interesting trends:

  • If number of searches indicates who is going to win on Sunday, it looks like we’re going into overtime because the Packers and Steelers are neck and neck for total Bing searches.
  • Take heart Dallas. If making it to the big game was based only on Bing searches, we would be watching the Cowboys compete this weekend.
  • Brett Favre, Randy Moss and Michael Vick were in the top five most searched players. Looks like on- the-field success combined with off-the-field news can propel players to the top.

And the survey says:

  • While 39% said Tom Brady is the best looking NFL player, he came in second behind Peyton Manning in the favorite player category.*
  • When asked what player they would most like to watch the Super Bowl with, Peyton Manning received 55% of the vote.
  • 40% of people polled  rated Buffalo wings as their top football snack.

It’s been a great season. And hopefully Bing has helped you make the most of it with our line-up of features including player comparisons and stats, taxi fare calculator, weather, recipes, local restaurants and bars, parking lot finders and more. Head over to www.bingfootball.com to learn more.

Tue, 22 Feb 2011 02:38:20 -0800 Smell-o-Vision Coming to PCs by Christmas http://didsneds9.posterous.com/smell-o-vision-coming-to-pcs-by-christmas http://didsneds9.posterous.com/smell-o-vision-coming-to-pcs-by-christmas

ScentScape

It's been a joke (or a prediction) for years that eventually we'd be able to taste and smell TV, movies, and games just as we hear, see, and feel them (even if that last one isn't something most PC gamers are able to do). Soon you will indeed be able to smell the games you're playing thanks to something called the ScentScape.

Made by Scent Sciences Corporation, the ScentScape is described as "an innovative digital scent delivery system." Besides sounding downright fancy, it seems to be pretty easy to use: You simply plug it into a USB port on your computer and, with a supported game, the appropriate scent is released when the time comes. There are 20 "basic scents" included in each replaceable cartridge, among them pine forest, ocean, flowers, and smoke -- so, at least in this version, there's no need to worry about what will happen when wandering into an area akin to The Great Mighty Poo's cave in Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Each cartridge will last 200 hours or more "in heavy use," with the ability to alter the strength of the smell. Though it's only been shown on PC, it's said that it will be "compatible with all major formats."

The January 28th episode of the Robots Podcast introduces two researchers in the field of robotic olfaction, or investing robots with a sense of smell. Here is my colleague John Payne's summary: Hiroshi Ishida is an Associate Professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology. In the past eighteen years he has developed robots with olfactory sensors that operate in aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic environments. In the interview Ishida talks about the development of the Active Stereo Nose, a differential gas sampling system inspired by the dog's nose (see image above) and the Crayfish robot that mimics the mechanism used by crayfish in nature to create unidirectional water currents. The second interviewee is Thomas Lochmatter from the Distributed Intelligent Systems and Algorithms Laboratory at EPFL. He emphasizes the importance of sensing airflow (wind) in locating the source of an odor or chemical contaminant, describes two general types of algorithms for accomplishing this task, and discusses how the use of multiple robots fares under each regime. Finally, he discusses real world applications. For more information have a look at the Robots website or directly tune in!

Mon, 21 Feb 2011 05:38:18 -0800 Holiday Gifts: Handmade, Local and Re-gifts http://didsneds9.posterous.com/holiday-gifts-handmade-local-and-re-gifts-8 http://didsneds9.posterous.com/holiday-gifts-handmade-local-and-re-gifts-8 For the holidays I received some new eau de toilette and realized that the ones sitting on my dresser had been there for over 3 years and I hadn't worn them in awhile. They smelled pretty good still and they still had over 25% of it left over (all the more reason to buy half an ounce at a time).
And by the way, it is suggested that you keep your eau de toilettes out of the bathroom and put it someplace that keeps at room temperature.

A new perfume/cologne, but how to use the old one?
? Use as a room deodorizer (bathroom, bedroom, automobile)
? Spray into a new vacuum bag or emptied container
? Ward off animals around your garden - Spray strips of material and hang around garden
? Hold onto them for a selling at a yard sale (keep them out of the sun though)
? Spray onto your light bulbs - instead of paying $10 a piece, also spray when they are turned off.
? Spritz into the TP roll when changing - save $$ on scented rolls from Charmin
? Use in the drawer, closet or gym bag - spray a cotton ball and put a couple in the corners
? Take it to work and keep handy against those lunch smells

Homemade/Local Made
Let me start off by stating that store bought items are wonderful and I love to receive them. Now I will also say there is a special place in my heart for those items that have had extra sweat poured into them. (Not counting all the cool items handed down through the family)

I still have the king sized peach colored quilt my grandmother stitched for me in 1992. She was unsure how I would use it, and gave me a way to hang it up with a rod as well as sewing information about  the quilt, such as when it was made, by whom and who designed the patterns for it (my great grandmother and great, great grandmother).
Other items around the house that hold a special place in my heart:
? A melted bottle spoon holder
? Bottles of spices made from herb garden
? Many ceramic dishes and housewares made by a family member
? Jars of jelly, cookies and homemade breads
? Locally made organic Zkano socks (won a pair- no rule against being free)
? 8mm home movies put onto a dvd
? Homemade soaps that smell yummy

Organizing the Re-Gifts
This year I only re-gifted one item that I had been holding onto for a few months, it is my goal to re-gift at least one item a year and maybe more; but it isn't something I have control over.

There are just some gifts that don't work with our personality or interests. It is at those times you smile big (include the crinkle at your eyes for a genuine smile) and say "thank you very much!" Then you set the item aside and when you are alone, put a post-it note on the item with the name of the person who gave it to you so you don't accidentally give it back.

Keep a box or an easily accessible corner in the closet to put it away for that upcoming birthday or holiday where you can pull it out and wrap it for another person who will appreciate it more, thus saving yourself money and not wasting the money of the giver.
Flickr/cc - tornatore
6 Words of Wisdom on Re-gifting:
? It's a Secret - Don't let the giver or the receiver know, unless you are certain they are ok with the idea of re-gifting.
? Clean and Update it - Make sure the dust is cleaned off and any old wrapping is removed. Clean the past off and give it a new future.
? Stay Away from Hand-me-downs - If I've seen you wear it around and I said I liked it, I really don't want it as a gift. Re-gifts should look like new. There are the occasional special situations, such as the family heirloom. But the bamboo cutting board should look new, not like you used it for last night's stir fry.
? Keep Track - Like I said above, find a way to keep track of who the giver was, so that you don't give it back to them or their circle of friends and they recognize it again.
? Sell it off - When you have no idea who to re-gift the item to, then sell it off to someone new and use the money towards your gift buying. Or even better, give it away to a charity and get a tax write-off receipt for it.
? Re-gifting White Elephants - These are the same items you give back and forth to the same people over and over again. This is something that is mutually agreed upon. This would be a used book, or a bad brick of bread and so on.

What are some items you would NEVER re-gift?

Though we'd like to believe that the games that have had a huge impact on our lives are indeed works of art, the fact of the matter is they're mass-produced products meant to line shelves and the wallets of those who made them. That means that, yes, even The Legend Of Zelda has had its logo and characters stamped on some pretty surprising pieces of crap all in the name of making a quick buck.
