Marvel vs. Capcom 3 alternate costumes fated for DLC packs

In two weeks' time, no amount of Marvel cologne is going to be able to mask the odor of Marvel vs. Capcom 3's fighters, whose suits will have been drenched and dried in super juices many times over. It's perhaps welcome news, then, that six of the game's heroes will be due for a costume change on Tuesday, March 1, when the first of the (sure to be many) alternate costume packs will be released on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

The first pack will provide Team Marvel's Thor, Captain American and Iron Man and Team Capcom's Dante, Ryu and Chris Redfield with fresh garments for $5 total. Additionally, Capcom has confirmed that the first Shadow Mode DLC pack will also be available on March 1 -- a good way to break in the new duds.

The Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath character pack will follow on March 15 for an undisclosed price, according to a leaflet in the Special Edition of the game (which includes a code to download the pair now). Capcom has yet to announce any DLC beyond these three releases over the next four weeks.

Tim Ferriss on Marketing the Four-Hour Body (Video)

Tim Ferriss is sitting on top of the world right now. For the second time in two tries he is a New York Times bestselling author thanks to his new book, The Four-Hour Body. This is the follow-up to Tim?s first book, The Four-Hour Workweek, which has sat squarely on the Amazon top 100 list for nearly four years.

To say the least, Tim?s marketing methods ? actually, all of his methods ? are unorthodox. He uses data to figure out how to get the most out of the system and himself. This leads to some innovative and often low-cost tactics. For example, he tested different titles for the Four-Hour Workweek using Google Ads.

I reconnected for breakfast with Tim in New York a couple of weeks back. In this video he summarizes the three strategies he took in marketing his new book. They include:

  • Involving the users in the product development by using choices
  • Embracing video and to make a mark
  • Empowering power users to help you

Innovators can learn a lot from the Tim Ferrisses of the world.

14 Money Savers @ Home, Apartment Style

I see a lot of great advice for those who own or even rent a home, things I have kept in the back of my mind for when I go single residence. But until them, I am @ home in my mile high apartment and I still want to save money.

I've already discussed how phantom power sucks up your money and that keeping your clothes dryer clean saves as well (if you are lucky enough to have one in your home). But there are still a few items that can save you money in your apartment.

1. Borrow  or Rent it - Room is very limited in most apartments and storage at a premium for items that may be used 2-3 times a year. Renting from the local hardware store may be more worthwhile or check out Borrowtools or Neighborgoods. Of course you want to consider the cost of renting versus buying the item over the long term. And keep your eye out for tools you may need at garage sales (always ask to plug it in).

2. Keep Closets Closed - Having closet doors closed allows you to heat or cool a smaller area and also keeping closet doors closed that have an exterior wall, keep the home insulated. A bonus is that guests won't see your clutter. If you don't have doors this is a great time to get some nice fabric or heavy single size flat sheet to act as your door.

3. Peak and Non-Peak Use - If the utility bill goes directly to you and not split with others then try getting on the utility companies peak/non-peak plan for reduced rates. Some companies have lower rates if you use washer/dryer and dishwasher later in the evening or early morning.

4. DIY Cleaning Supplies - In small areas with few windows, using non-toxic cleaners may be best for you physically and you can save upwards of $50 a year by making your own. And speaking of odor removal ideas, don't forget DIY for stinking feet/shoes and  the smelly bathroom.

5. Fan Yourself - If you have the authorization, install a ceiling fan, even if you have to leave it behind, it can be your best friend in the summer and the winter. If not, fans throughout the house are handy in the summer to keep costs down. And in the winter, open up your window shades to let the heat warm up your room.

6. Changing to CFL - Since the incandescent light bulb is being phased out in 2012 and no longer produced by 2014, it should be easier to get the CFL bulbs for cheaper prices. Just be careful of CFLs that easily burn out. And if you are worried about contamination, then you will be glad to know that LED lights are slowing making it into the stores and they last even longer.

7. Replace AC filters - If you have central air, like myself. There will be a location to change out the filter and hopefully your complex office does it for you. If not, make sure you do it once a year to keep the AC cost down when using it, though some suggest replacing them every month in the summer if it is on everyday.

8. Replacing Grills - If you can hold off until fall or winter for better sales on the BBQ grills, that can save you quite a bit of money. Just replaced our little propane grill in 10 years and saved 31% with free shipping.

9. Heated Water - If you get your bill for heated water, then you should have the ability to lower the water heater temperature. This can save you about $30 a year and reduce any scalding issues. In my case, the water
heater doesn't have temperature settings, but does have A, B, C and Very Hot, so I set mine at A, but this picture shows someone turned it up. (oops)
For your info:
? (triangle up) = 120?
A = 130?
B = 140?
C = 150?
Very Hot = 160?

Did you know that dropping the water temperature setting by ten degrees typically saves about 4% on the cost to heat water each year.

10. Insurance for Accidents - I know that you would never set your home on fire, but you can't always trust that your neighbor won't accidentally do that. Renter's insurance is something that costs pennies to add with your car insurance premiums and is a nice bit of piece of mind if the unthinkable should happen.

11. Shower Timer - Handy for the person, like myself, who soaks for an hour in a SHOWER. You can buy ones that turn your water off or do like I do and just get an annoying sounding timer for when you shower.

12. Programmable Thermometer - Check with your leasing office to see if you can replace the old thermometer with a programmable one to save money on AC/Heat instead of flipping the switch at whim. In my complex, I can buy one and they will install it, but I have to take it with me when I move.

13. Wrap in Plastic - Especially for north facing windows that get hit with the wind, put up plastic on the windows to keep in the warm and the cold out. This stuff can be put up in about 30 minutes or less. Well worth the expense for the plastic.

14. Bricked Tank - I see suggestions to put a brick in your toilet tank. This is handy if your toilet is not one of the efficient models (mine says 1.3gpf) . If it is an old type, a brick can be wonderful but possibly crack your tank if it is really old. An alternative is to fill up a 20oz plastic bottle and drop it in - just as effective and not as dangerous.

Success in Frugal Living

I apologize for the trouble with approving comments, will have them posted once figured out.

Have you noticed that people who are successful at living frugally- living on less than they make and saving and investing - are always asked how they did it and seem to expect a 3 point solution that will be as easy as waking up and putting on underwear in the morning.

There is a trap to thinking that there is a magic key that will unlock success and it can be replicated the exact same way by each and every person. Unfortunately, this is not the truth of the matter.

Before I go further, I want to make it clear that we can all learn lessons from people who have achieved a successful frugal life. Sometimes their correct decisions and roads taken in life can work in similar way for you. And like birds who find nourishment in the crumbs we drop, we also can find useful ideas from the lives of those who have succeeded before us.

As we journey toward a frugal life, there are a few things to consider so that you don't get tripped up along the way. Just as I want to be successful, I want you too as well.

1.No Magic Key
Action is the foundational key to all success.
Pablo Picasso

A successful frugal life has no key to open up steps that, if done in the right order, will take you right to a life of financial freedom. I wish that were true, but in my 37 years on this earth I have found that nothing is that simple except a recipe. If you look at those who have frugal living down, you will notice that nothing has come easy to them. They make mistakes and learn from them and they know that the goal for a frugal life is one of patience, hard work, doing things they may not want to, and all to get an end result that they are happy about. It doesn't fall into their lap; instead they put one foot in front of the other and move towards the goal they have in mind.

2.No Conclusion to Life

Despair is the conclusion of fools
Benjamin Disraeli

Life never comes to a conclusion as long as you still take in it's richness and expel your own thoughts and ideas. Through the process of my under-employed days, I have learned that frugal living is tossing me a new set of challenges that I thought I would be prepared for. I am very aware that I need to keep in the forefront of my mind all that I have accomplished and all that I have learned and use those to my best abilities, but also take those ideas and grow them beyond my initial understanding while using my creativity.

3. Enjoy the Journey
The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.
Don Williams, Jr.

It bears repeating again, we need to remember that if it weren't for the journey, we would have no lessons learned and wouldn't be stronger in character for it further down the road. Make sure you look back on something you have achieved and realize what a large hurdle that was at the time. Now look at the hurdles you have today, would you be able to handle these back before you got over those other hurdles, earlier in your life? However difficult things are in life, we become stronger people because of them. Consider how our generation looks upon those who went through the 1930's and 1940's. We too can be great people because of our bumps in the road.

4. Don't Run, Walk
The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.
Abraham Lincoln

How many times have we been told that at the swimming pool as kids. Don't run, Walk! We all get a chance in the pool. It certainly would be more exciting to win the pot of gold at the end of the megamillions jackpot. But such a small percentage of people actually keep that money and then they also have to deal with the new found friends and family sticking out their hands.

Instead, taking our passion to live frugally, and we have the time to learn the best way to make and use that money that comes to us. We are already in a rush to learn the new technology that come out every year and are used to cheap  gadgets that can be replaced faster that fixing them. Building anything worthwhile takes time, whether that is the home you live in or garden you grow.

5. Passion Flickers
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music.
Angela Monet

Your passion, your desire, your drive to find that financial freedom, to living frugally isn't something that can be taught at a seminar or learned through a Youtube video. You bring that one small flickering flame to the game and you stoke the flame with knowledge, inspiration from others, hard work and patience. Taking action as you learn will cause the flame to spread throughout your life. For each of us the frugal life is a unique flame that only our life experiences, inner voice and  personal skills  can determine how far we go.

6. Trust That You Can
Follow your heart, but be quiet for a while first. Ask questions, then feel the answer. Learn to trust your heart.
Unknown

By all means call upon the help of mentors and friends who have walked the road before you. But, Remember that we each have a unique path to go and it is our hard work that brings the goals we have set for ourselves to come to fruition. Sometimes we look to other because we don't trust ourselves to do our own thing and trust our decisions. We need to learn that starting today, we need to listen to what our heart, our intuition, our gut is saying and start acting on what feels right. The only person who can regret a life is the one living it.
