Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam includes unlockable team challenge map

Much like it did with Battlefield 1943, developer DICE will add an additional map, Operation Hastings, once a community challenge is met in the multiplayer expansion Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam. However, this time DICE isn't making the challenge a collective kill count of 43 million. In keeping more with the spirit of cooperation in the game, the map will unlock once the community accomplishes 69 million team actions (double entendres abound).

In order to unlock the fifth Vietnam map, you'll have to heal, spot, repair, revive and resupply as often as possible ... but you were already doing that, right?

BFBC2 Vietnam will be drafted into service on December 21. Check out the Operation Hastings challenge video after the break.

Rock Band 3 title update fixes crashing, pause score exploit

At some point today, PS3 Rock Band 3 users will be prompted to download a mandatory title update -- the Xbox 360 patch is coming "in the near future". The first of two planned updates resolves some persistent glitches in the game, including freezes that take place during the amp loading vignette and when messing around with eyebrows in the character creator. " All eyebrows are now safe," the forum thread assures us.

Additionally, an exploit where players could constantly pause mid-song to inflate score has been addressed in the update. Now any performance during a song that's been paused multiple times won't have its score reported. Also, we reluctantly point out that one of the more dreaded issues, the PS3 keyboard audio glitch, is not included in today's update. Harmonix has acknowledged the issue and is looking into a fix.

[Thanks, Wes J]

Bowl made from melted little green army men

dominic wilcox bowl.jpg

Dominic Wilcox wants £159 for his 2002 piece War Bowl, which may make some amount of sense since Wilcox is a fairly well-established "name" artist, and the piece itself has been exhibited in various fancy places. Still, you can make your own version by partially melting a bunch of army men in a glass or metal bowl in the oven, and it'll cost you just a buck or two. [via Gizmodo]

Artists unite for education reform at REDU HOMEROOM

As we highlighted last week, REDU HOMEROOM, a two-week fundraising exhibition featuring original art by five renowned artists is up and running in New York.   The featured artists: Scott Campbell, Neck Face, José Parla, Lucien Marc-Smith, and Luis Gispert are drawing from their personal experiences to produce works that inspire dialogue and action around education reform.

In Jeff Staple’s words, the message of the exhibit is, “you can become whoever you want if you work hard and have teachers that care about your progress.”

For those of you who couldn’t make the event, we are currently running a give-away on Twitter where you can win artwork produced by the designers.  To learn more and win, click here.

Or if you are interested in purchasing any of the artworks or merchandise with proceeds going towards education projects, please click here.

Tip: Tweetify the Lead of Your Emails

In this age of information abundance, we all get a little too much email. It's highly likely that - thanks to the message preview function - your recipient will make a decision about what to do with that message before he/she even opens it. This means that the first few characters of your note are essential. You got to hook 'em or they be gone.

Here's a little tip I am going to try - don't bury the lead. Instead, Tweetify it! Here's why...

Most email systems preview the first 50-75 characters of an email. Therefore, to be heard, you increasingly need to write your first sentence like a tweet - or more like half a tweet. Skip openers that start with "my name is" and get some of the meat in your first sentence. It will increase the likelihood that your reader will get further into your note.

Here's a good example. Brett Kelly, whom I have never corresponded with before, sent me a brief note about his new eBook on Evernote called Evernote Essentials. He made the point right up front, which piqued my interest and encouraged me to read on further.

It doesn't matter if you're trying to reach a CEO or a friend, the model works. To practice, head over to this site and write your first sentence there. Then come back to your email client. Your recipient will thank you.

Disclosure: Brett sent me a free unsolicited copy of his ebook, which is valued at $25.
