New Twitter Shifts the Car from Neutral into Drive

Twitter:

?Today, we?re introducing a new, re-engineered Twitter.com that provides an easier, faster, and richer experience.?

This is a smart move. It helps them on two fronts: bringing in more brand marketers and newbies.

Twitter had been stuck. They are growing significantly for sure ? but all of it is coming off a small base of active users.

The redesign gives marketers more flexibility in design and newbies a reason to stay longer. This ? over time ? will turn them from passive users into more active ones that tweet.

It?s what they had to do get out of neutral gear.

Walmart Wants to Install Wine Vending Machines [Video]

Noting their success at other grocery stores, Pittsburgh-area Walmart wonder emporiums are petitioning for permission to install self-serve wine kiosks that require an ID swipe and a breathalyzer. Makes sense, given Walmart's large and demanding wine-connoisseur/oenophile client base. Mm, Walmart-wine. More »

Codemasters Files Complaint Over Jumpgate Evolution Delay

It's been more than a year since the massively multiplayer space shooter Jumpgate Evolution was supposed to launch, and Codemasters is making its displeasure known.

Massively is reporting that the UK publisher has filed a civil complaint against developer Gazillion and NetDevil in a San Francisco federal court. They allege that NetDevil and Gazillion are in breach of contract for failing to ship the game by its original February 2009 release date, and are seeking $1.4 million it paid for art assets, advances, internal costs and external costs.

Jumpgate Evolution is the sequel to Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative, which was originally released in 2001. In discussing one of the game's delays back in May 2009, NetDevil's Scott Brown stressed that the company doesn't want to give fans an "unfinished product."

The iPad Stimulus Plan

David Rothman writing on James Fallows' blog says we need an iPad stimulus plan. Fallows:

"In this essay, (Rothman) proposes ways that radically speeded-up adoption of the iPad-style devices could serve economic-stimulus and social-equality needs at the same time."

It's a lengthy essay, but compelling in that Rothman sees the iPad as a way to help media and education in one fell swoop. It would be great to see tablets become a pivotal way we retrain the workforce. #

Steam Treasure Hunt promotion giving away games for in-game accomplishments

Steam, the market's leading innovator for promotions to make you buy irresponsible amounts of their product, has struck gold once again with its current Treasure Hunt promotion. Here's how it works: Every two days, four "objectives" become available, requiring hunters to perform both out-of-game and in-game tasks for prizes. For example, current goals include setting up a Steam profile picture, or earning a ridiculously high score in Chime -- which, like all the other games with objectives on the list, is discounted during the two-day period.

Anyone who accomplishes one of the four tasks will be eligible for a drawing at the end of each two-day chunk, through which 20 users will receive five games off their wishlists for free. Anyone who accomplishes 10 of the goals during the entire promotion will be entered to win the grand prize: 100 games of their choosing from the Steam platform. There are also exclusive Team Fortress 2 hats to be distributed to fervent hunters, which, let's be honest, is going to sell more games than all the other prizes up for grabs. People just love them some virtual hats.

[Thanks, Zayd!]
