Guest Post: Bing National Tailgating Championship hits Denver

Last weekend the regionals of the Bing National Tailgate Championship moved to Denver's Mile High, where team Bronco Bus won the battle for tailgate supremacy. Chase Boswell, owner of the vehicle that gave the team its name, said the team has spent countless weekends upgrading the bus which has become a parking lot fixture in Denver. The Bronco Bus will be hitting the road to compete in the finals in Dallas/Fort Worth on February, 3rd

Next Sunday, the next event will roll onto New Meadowlands Stadium. Over the next few months we will be holding regional events at the following stadiums. If you’re in the area, come check out the competition and meet the Bing Team who will show you how Bing can help you make the most of your game day decisions.

Joe Cahn joins us again this week with a recap of the action in Denver.

A mile high thank you to Denver!

By Joe Cahn

I was looking forward to this “Mile High” stop on the Bing National Tailgating Championship tour -- not just because of the food and the atmosphere -- but because of the unique tradition in Denver.

· “The Drive.”

· “The Fumble.”

· “The Orange Crush.”

· “The Three Amigos.”

The Super Bowl wins. The lore of this organization, founded in 1960, is something truly special to Broncos fans and the people of Denver.

And it always spills over to the parking lot.

Denver put on an incredible show that started with four teams that came out and gave their very best. I had mentioned that I was looking for a little “Rocky Mountain Flare” and these teams did not disappoint.

clip_image008

The Kuhl Brothers brought out a rolling history of Broncos memorabilia -- and some superb steaks that made me think of the rolling ranches of Colorado.

JV’s Bronco Posse had a display awash in orange and blue -- with some of the best Mexican food (with a distinctly Colorado flare) I have tasted at a tailgate. The breakfast burrito they offered up at the beginning was sublime.

Dean’s Donkey Den brought ponies. Yes, you read it right -- they brought ponies out to their tailgate for people to ride. Oh, and their food was yet another example of doing it right “Mile High Style.” The ribs were a particular favorite of mine.

The Broncos Bus cooked up some remarkable burgers (a Denver Broncos parking lot legend, I found out) and did it up with an old-school bus decked out for a great time.

One of the great joys that I have as The Commissioner of Tailgating is the interaction with the teams and judges. In Denver, I spent time with the wonderfully funny Lori Midson of Westword, the legendary Denver restaurant maven Gabby Gourmet and Denver Broncos legend Karl Mecklenburg.

Clearly, they were impressed with all of the teams. Each of the judges was focused and took their jobs very seriously. For the record, I take my job very seriously but I don’t take myself too seriously -- that’s why it seemed like a fine idea to have Karl Mecklenburg sign my head in the middle of the competition.

The feedback was universal: everyone did a great job and the teams represented Denver and the Denver Broncos very well. Just like our first stop, the teams showed great camaraderie and rooted each other on -- and the winners are excited to be heading down to Texas to represent the Mile High City at the Super Bowl.

And, apparently, we’re some kind of good luck charm as evidenced by the email we received from Tom Harrington, the Broncos Bus fella decked out in his orange tuxedo:

“Fantastic setup, and a wonderful day for football.  I think we need to do that before every Broncos home game.  Clearly you all brought the Broncos some much needed luck.

Very pleased that we were able to participate, and of course, thrilled that we were fortunate enough to win!

If it means that we’d be able to spend more time with these amazing tailgaters and Denver Broncos fans, we’re in.”

Another great stop on the way to the champion -- and this Sunday, we hit the New Meadowlands and the Jets/Texans tilt. There’s going to be some great tailgating with a distinctly New York/New Jersey flavor.

East Coast, we’re coming your way -- and I’ll see you down the road.

Presentation: Six Digital Trends to Watch

One of the best aspects of my job is that I get to learn from incredibly smart people. Working for Edelman is like playing for the Yankees. Richard Edelman has an approach to talent that in some ways resembles the late George Steinbrenner (not the Howie Spira side of George, but the good side). The firm consistently attracts all-stars to the team and puts them in a great position to succeed. The result is that every day I get to hit the field with pros like Mike Slaby or Richard Sambrook or Carol Cone - it's all very inspiring.

One of these people is David Armano - who I work very closely with - and we recently tag-teamed on this presentation on six trends to watch. For more head over to David's blog. As always, we're eager to hear your thoughts.

Small Ways to Use Less and Save Money

Why worry about the small things, they aren't worth much and waste time. There is an Ethiopian proverb that talks about the power of small things: "When the spiderwebs unite, they can tie up a lion."

In the Bathroom
Shampoo - I was watching a shampoo commercial on TV and found it interesting that the person in the commercial had used enough shampoo that they could spike their hair into the shape of a Mohawk. That meant that they had used more than the recommended quarter size amount, or in his case, since it was shorter, nickel or dime shaped amount.

The shampoo bottle doesn't have a recommended amount to use on the bottle, they just hope you will think of their highly suds out commercial and use enough to make your own Mohawk.

Toothpaste - Toothpaste commercials again show us the way not to use toothpaste. That large amount of toothpaste looks really pretty on the brush, but is a waste. (If it all even makes it into your mouth and not onto the sink.) The dental association says, "Simply squeeze on a pea-sized dab of paste on the top half of your brush....the paste should foam enough to cover all of your teeth."

Toilet Paper - This subject can get kind of stinky with some people, such as when Sheryl Crow suggested we only use one square or even before that, Elaine from Seinfeld begged the person in the next stall to "spare a square".

But think about it, is it our goal to make the toilet paper into the size of a catcher's mitt in order to wipe. There isn't a square we can spare before we wash our hand's anyway? During World War II, it was rationed and you would only use a few squares of TP as your way to help the troops.

Water - It runs throughout the house, but doesn't have to run down the drain. There are 25 ways you save water and I have one way to save hot water in the shower, not including a low-flow shower head.

In the Laundry Room
Laundry Detergent - They give you a measured cup for the load size you are using, but do you have to use that amount? Based on responses over at the Dollar Strether, they say  to agree on ¼ to ½ of what the suggested amount is.

Hot Water - Using cold water cleans just as thoroughly as hot water and keeps your clothes in continued good shape and retain their color. Plus you don't have to wait for it to heat up. Then save the hot water to wash towels/linens and underwear to kill bacteria.

In the Kitchen
Boiling water - Just enough water to cover the food and a cover over the pan saves on heating water.

Dish Soap - If you do it by hand, a few dollups of soap are all that is needed. Most of the time you can have the pan soak while washing the other dishes and not have to use as much soap in getting the grime off.
For dishwasher detergent they have packets that can be used and if you compare that against the size of your compartment, you don't have to fill the compartment up - about 1-2 tablespoons.

Electricity - Using less electricity can be viewed the same as using a car to run errands, bundle it in one trip. That saves you the time to heat up for each item you want to cook each day. An already warm oven can allow you to move the food in and out faster, saving time.

This idea can be used for the dryer as well. An already warm dryer allows the 2nd batch of clothes to dry quicker because the dryer is not having to ramp up to the warmth needed.

Bing Feature Update: Bing Movies streamlines movie search

Providing the best movie results for everyone who uses Bing is not an easy task. Many times, you’re looking for a movie because it’s received great reviews, has a mind-blowing trailer or is playing at your favorite theater.  Other times, you’re looking for a movie based on where you happen to be, or what time the film is showing.  And if you’re like us, it’s usually all of the above.

This week we are releasing an update to Bing Movies, which introduces a redesigned interface that streamlines how you search and select  the movies you’re looking to watch.  Bing Movies organizes the top movie information within the new interface letting you go a step deeper based on your needs:

  • Showtimes: Our new Showtimes page makes it incredibly easy to see which movies are playing at theatres near you.  Instead of having to go from theatre result to theatre result trying to find movie times, with Bing Movies you pick a movie and are served the showtimes at the closest theatres in one snap.
  • Trailers: The new Trailer page provides you with the latest trailers, clips and interviews at a glance.
  • Reviews:  The Reviews page combines reviews from top critic outlets like the NY Times and LA Times with those from users, giving you a quick and comprehensive way to determine whether the movie is worth the price of admission.

Let us know what you think,

Nate Buggia- Bing Movies
