Reel Fishing Paradise 3D for 3DS puts fish in your face

Natsume's Reel Fishing series is going to get a bit more "reel" with the addition of a third dimension. The publisher has announced a 3DS iteration of its fishing franchise, out some time this spring.

Reel Fishing Paradise 3D will include a variety of fishing venues, including "tranquil lakes, rocky coasts, flooded forests, and more." Good thing those forests are flooded, or you'd have a hard time navigating a boat through them. Paradise features customizable and upgradeable equipment, too, allowing you to blame your particular combination of reel, bait, etc. every single time you fail.

Epic Indian robotics movie on Youtube

Robots Podcast's John Payne pointed us to a new movie called "Endhiran" ("Robot"), which has become an instant hit on YouTube. Endhiran is the biggest-budget production of any movie in Indian film history. The computer-generated parts are well crafted, despite being totally over-the-top. As pointed out by our colleagues at BotJunkie, the above trailer in Tamil with Russian voice-over could very well become a cult classic. If you like the trailer, also have a look at this one, especially the initial sequence or at the full Endhiran movie (including English subs).

Frugal Web: The Magician's Coin and Recycling

At my part-time job I run coins through a sorter in the store's accounting office and this allows me the chance to purchase at face value silver coins and money from the 19th century. I consider this a quite benefit at my job since we rarely get any kind of incentive.

In my time working there I have found a penny worth $100, made quite a few rolls of silver dimes, nickels and quarters and found a few out of country coins, even a 1938 penny from Germany. These coins have provided a nice side hobby that allows me to make a little money on the ones I want to put up for sale and I learn a bit of history in the research.

Recently though I came across a part of the coin world I wasn't aware of - the scammers, or in this case, a "magician's coin". This one was a vintage one that had a mercury dime on one side and welded or glued to the other side was a wheat penny. No hollow middle, and it rings like a regular coin when dropped.

However, the question came up in the accounting office, is it worth a dime, a penny or nothing? Answer, we treat it like any bus token we get, it's worth nothing but play money. However, I had an interesting bit of research to do about defacing coins, fraud and the little world of novelty coins. And it is not illegal to make them, but it IS illegal to use them as money after they have been altered. And the coin value is 1.75 after bidding.

Drinking Glasses from Cans - If you live in a state that doesn't have bottle/can deposits and you don't have enough aluminum to take to the recycle center, you could make a "poor man's" drinking glass or a pen holder or whatever else you might need.

On the topic of recycling there are quite a few sites that you can use to recycle items and keep them out of the trash, especially if you pay per weight.
1.  Freecycle and the ReuseIt Network are two email community based sites to give away or pick up FREE items

2.  Ecycler - Sign-up to give away your recyclable items or to go pick up someone elses on the way to the recycle center. A 33 gal. bag of 200 aluminum cans is $2.15, so it may not be worth it for someone to make the trip for one, but worth recycling them if someone picks up yours and gives you the cash.

3.  The Recycle Bank occasionally gives away free points. But you can earn them by recycling, reducing or reusing items through sites like eBay, Nature Made vitamins and sending in your recyclables. The points are then used towards gift cards and stuff you need to purchase. Currently, over 125,000 households in the U.S are signed up.

If you are uncertain about the power of recycling, check out the video on the Story of Stuff and also know that you can find other recycle centers to turn your stuff into at Earth 911

Finally, I thought Donna wrote a great article on the Practice of Stealthy Acts of Kindness. I've got a few ideas of my own that I want to try for 2011 and look forward to helping out more in stealthy ways.

Bing Trends: Top search trends for this year's Oscars

If search trends are a sure indication of an Oscar win, then this year’s best picture statue goes to Black Swan.

But Natalie Portman shouldn’t start preparing her acceptance speech just yet because the awards don’t always go to the most popular star on the marquee or the most searched for movie on the web.  For instance, The Hurt Locker which took last year’s best picture award was searched 35 times less than Avatar.

The Academy released their nominees on Monday and we thought it would be interesting to find out what people out there are thinking about and searching for this Oscar season.    So we combined Bing search results with a recent Bing survey (fielded by CrowdTap) to provide more insight into who got snubbed, who has popular appeal, and who is the most searched star in the running.

According to the results, the people’s choice for best supporting actress and actor were left on the cutting room floor.

  • According to Bing’s survey, 32 percent of respondents said Michael Douglas should have nabbed a best supporting actor nomination for his role in Wall Street II.
  • 41 percent said Mila Kunis should have been nominated for best supporting actress.

When asked which Golden Globe nominees would get snubbed at the Academy Awards, those surveyed were spot on:

  • 25% said Emma Stone would get snubbed for the best actress nomination
  • 23% said Johnny Depp would get snubbed for the best actor nomination
  • 30% said Alice in Wonderland and 25% said Burlesque would get snubbed for Best Picture nomination

A new award should be created for films that impact real world search patterns.  Searches for “Mark Zuckerburg” jumped 5.5 fold in October, the same month that “The Social Network” was released in the U.S. In fact, searches for “Facebook” more than doubled during Oct. and Nov. 2010, returning to the 2010 average in the month of December

To bring to life the findings we have created a full infographic. Click on the image below to see full size (right click and save if you would like to use.)

Check out the Oscar’s Bing Visual Search Gallery where you can see all the past winners and sort by categories including best picture, youngest actor and most wins.

Want to own a piece of SparkFun history?

When SparkFun first got started, we used the classic hot-plate technique for solder reflow. As we grew, it became more and more necessary for us to invest in a reflow oven. So we did - buying a used 1985 Vitronics SMD 300 Reflow Oven.

Isn't he handsome?

We lovingly named him "Gramps,"and though curmudgeonly, he has served us well. Gramps has worked on thousands of SparkFun widgets and is still kicking it like it's 1985. Unfortunately (for Gramps at least), we recently bought a newer oven with all the bells and whistles. So it has come to this - rather than ship Gramps off to the old folks home, we are trying to find him a new place to live. Gramps is for sale.

You can see Gramps in the left side of old production. Yes, Gramps has seen it all.

If you're interested, we have a Craigslist ad posted. The asking price is $1500 (though we will certainly entertain any reasonable offers). Gramps is in good shape and fully-functioning. He has 6 heating zones (3 top, 3 bottom) and comes equipped with dual ventilation and an instruction manual. All he needs from you is 220V/50A and your love and affection. Gramps is from 1985, so there is no warranty implied here and pickup is on your shoulders (not literally, Gramps is pretty heavy). If you're interested, check out the ad and shoot us an email!

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 'Reverie' DLC delayed until March

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow's "Reverie" DLC, originally set to be released this month, has slipped into March according to an announcement on the Castlevania Facebook page. "Our apologies for the delay but it's going to be worth it!" That "unruly evil" that Gabriel and Laura track down in the DLC is only going to be more unruly the longer we let it stew.

Konami offered no reason for the delay, but a late, complete DLC pack is always preferable to a buggy, punctual release. It is also unknown whether this delay will cause the followup DLC to slip out of its April release window. We're checking in with Konami to find out when it has scheduled the "Resurrection."
