Bing Feature Update: Discover more things your Facebook friends like

As Satya talked about today, building on our exclusive collaboration with Facebook  we will soon be rolling out another update designed to make search more social and relevant.

Over the last several weeks, we introduced the new “Liked” results feature that uses the basis of your query to surmise your intent and surface relevant stories or websites  that your friends on Facebook have liked with a nice answer, called out somewhere on the page.   For instance, if I search for “Bistro Cuisine, Seattle” and my friend has liked “Stumbling Goat Restaurant in Seattle” it will show as a liked result based on the fact that my friend has pressed the "Like" button on this business listing on Citysearch.

Based on the positive customer feedback, we are taking this feature a step further expanding the results to include even more sites.  Starting today, if your search results include a specific link that has also been “liked” by someone in your Facebook network the link will be highlighted as “Liked” within Bing.  This gets especially interesting for a query like "Xbox" where my friend “Liked” the "Kinect" site and while our algorithms didn't feel it was relevant enough to make it the 'answer' we reference above, we are still able to indicate that my friend liked that link that happened to show up within the results.

Xbox

Stay tuned- we have lots more in store on the social front.

Paul Yiu – Group Program Manager, Bing

This feature is currently only available in the US.

6 Shopping Tips Without Coupons

This week I looked over the coupons in the paper and the new grocery store circulars and realized that there were not many great deals out there for my style of eating. I don't eat hot dogs much and I've stopped eating most of cold cereals that coupons come out for.

What all this means is that the monthly grocery shopping will be almost coupon-less. But I'm not worried, I can still keep my food bill low by shopping without coupons.

List and Calculator
I keeping a running list on my whiteboard and then when there are sales weekly, I jot down what I need and grab them for the week. When the monthly grocery run comes up, then what is left over on the list goes with me. I have a $110 grocery budget for food when it comes to food items. Of course the weekly runs take me over that, but it is easily covered by setting aside $20-50 for those runs.

If I come under the $110 budget for the month, that is then a good time to start stocking up on Thanksgiving or Christmas food. Recently, duck was on sales at a good price per pound and there was room in the monthly budget to get it, so that will go into the freezer until Thanksgiving.

The calculator is just for me to stay on budget. I round up to the next dollar (since I can't keep track of what is taxed and what isn't.) and use that as my guide to trimming my list down or adding more items for an upcoming special meal.

Food Circulars
I do my monthly shopping at a specific grocery store and then the weekly shopping is usually done at the stores nearest my house, depending on the deals. But I do look at them and check for items on my whiteboard grocery list.

The best deals for each store circular are on the front page or the flap that promotes deals for the weekend only. But since my list is pretty small during the week, it takes at most 5 minutes to glance through the weekly ads to King Soopers or Safeway to decide what has the best deals.

Loyalty Cards
I don't like it that if you want the better price (sale price) you have to have a loyalty card to get it. I do like it better that a sale is a sale whether you fill out personal information or not. However, since it is already done I can't complain much. The downside is if the card is forgotten or you used the card to scrape the windows last winter and haven't gotten a new one. Most grocery stores allow you to enter your phone number.

I have heard that if you try the popular phone number song, 867*5309 with your own area code, you may still be able to get a good deal or two. But I haven't personally tried it. I know that lately some grocery stores will give a money back if you buy a certain number of name brand items on top of the usual weekly savings, so cards do come in handy.

Dump Brands
In most cases, if I don't have a coupon for the brand name item, the store brand comes in under the name brand. There are a few items where there are no store brands or the item's store brand didn't cut the quality test for me. At those times I take the name brand, coupon or not.

Walk the Circumference
I would say that over half of the items I buy are on the "outside ring" of the stores. Milk, bread, poultry, fruits and vegetables. The items in the middle are more processed than I would desire, except for the baking aisle and frozen area (ice cream).

Go Clearance
For markdowns on meats I ask the employees when they mark down the meats, in one store they do it around 8-9am. Another store has set aside half of a freezer area for marked down milk, eggs, cheese and the like. And most all grocery stores have an area in the back - usually around the entrance to the back room, where they mark down shelf items like dented soup, bread and bakery items. I get most of my bread from these areas.

That sums up my plans for this coming week on how I'm going shopping without coupons. A little planning and a budget. Then I keep my eyes peeled for clearance items I need and store brands that area cheaper in price. And finally I mostly keep to the outside ring of the store to stay healthy and I usually make sure to use my loyalty card for the extra discounts.

The iPad Stimulus Plan

David Rothman writing on James Fallows' blog says we need an iPad stimulus plan. Fallows:

"In this essay, (Rothman) proposes ways that radically speeded-up adoption of the iPad-style devices could serve economic-stimulus and social-equality needs at the same time."

It's a lengthy essay, but compelling in that Rothman sees the iPad as a way to help media and education in one fell swoop. It would be great to see tablets become a pivotal way we retrain the workforce. #

Atari loses Jeff Lapin as CEO, taps Jim Wilson to replace him

Atari is still shaking things up at the ol' corporate HQ, it seems. Current CEO, Jeff Lapin, has resigned from the position he took almost a year ago to this day. Lapin, who spent time at both Take-Two and THQ prior to his Atari gig, will be succeeded by Jim Wilson, Atari's now-former president and deputy CEO, Gamasutra reports. Lapin leaves the company on good terms, it seems, stating that he believes Wilson's "leadership and management skills" will help drive the company forward and that he wishes "Atari and its employees great success."

Wilson's been at Atari a bit longer than Lapin, having first signed on to work with the company back in 2008. Since then, Atari has lost a lot of money (though it's trying its hardest to get back into the black) and re-focused its efforts into producing "fewer but more profitable games." Atari board chairman Frank Dangeard isn't sweating the future, though -- Wilson "has the board's full support as he continues to drive new goals of growth and success" for Atari, he says.

Random Robot Roundup

By popular demand, another robot news roundup is here. First up is news from our friend William Cox. You probably know William as the guy who spent the last decade maintaining the GoRobotics blog, which was recently acquired by Roboshop. His new project is RobotBox a community site for showing off robots you've built. Some other robot building friends of ours over at Willow Garage are celebrating the 3rd anniversary of ROS, one of the leading robot operating systems software packages (no doubt because it's released as open source to preserve the user's software freedoms). Lisa Devaney writes to tell us about a cool new educational program in UK schools that "aims to teach youth about the future workplace in 10-15 years time, demonstrating how robotics will influence career choices". It's called Robots and Avatars. And of course, The Swirling Brain swirls on, this week swirling up a Register story on CMU's flying robot jeep, a cnet story on Japan's new flying surveillance robot, a cake decorating robot, and an update on military exoskeletons. Know any other robot news, gossip, or amazing facts we should report? Send 'em our way please. And don't forget to follow us on twitter.

mil_robot_santa.jpg

With everyone busy preparing for the holidays, we've had a few requests to extend the entry deadline for the robotic plant contest a bit. Well -- Robot Santa doesn't want to disappoint, so we've decided to push the entry deadline until January 30th, at 11:59PM PST. So enjoy your 'nog (or spiced motor oil, as the case may be) and relax a bix, but don't forget to finish your plant! Also, if you've already submitted an entry and want to tweak it a bit, feel free to re-submit an updated version.
