XBL Indie Games Winter Uprising now on Xbox dashboard, Cthulhu Saves the World out tomorrow

After getting off to a shaky start, the Xbox Live Indie Games Winter Uprising may just get a shot in the arm thanks to Microsoft. The Indie Games promotion is now featured on the Xbox dashboard. We reached out to Winter Uprising coordinator, Robert Boyd, who tells Joystiq "the Winter Uprising dashboard advertisement is a great step in the right direction." Boyd added that he's hopeful Microsoft will continue to support Indie Games in the future, perhaps with similar ads on a more regular basis. He also noted that Microsoft has "shown a recommitment" to Indie Games recently, moving the service back under the Games & Demos section on the dashboard and making it more visible.

Ska Studios' James Silva tells Joystiq, "I'm super happy to be on the Indie Games Winter Uprising; Robert put a ton of effort into pulling together the promo and the fact that it got on the dash is quite a testament to its success." He added that the reaction to Ska's Uprising title, ZP2KX has been "extremely positive" so far, and that he would "definitely support any future uprisings."

In more Winter Uprising news, Zeboyd -- Boyd's own indie studio -- has announced that Cthulhu Saves the World should arrive on Xbox Live on Thursday, December 30 for 240 MS Points ($3). Cthulhu Saves the World is one of the final entries in the Winter Uprising promotion, and is the follow-up to Zeboyd's last title, Breath of Death VII, which is currently one of the top games on the Indie Games service. Watch a (very short!) trailer of the throwback RPG adventure after the break.

LasercutChristmas classroom project in development

horseOrnaments.jpg

This year, I'm creating a new high school engineering program at Pembroke High School. As far as tools go, we've got three computer-controlled machines: Roland vinyl cutter, an Epilog laser cutter, and a MakerBot 3D printer.

These ornaments are from the laser cutter. I started with a picture of a horse, since my daughter is really into riding. Then I modified the picture a bit with Gimp and used CutStudio, the software that ships with the vinyl cutter, to trace the lines of contrast. I've also used this image to form the basis of a makerbotted cookie cutter, but that's another project altogether.

The original idea for this technique came from the work of several of my students in the Fashioning Tech class. Sam and Brooke were cutting images that they found online, and saw that the heavy black lines made image contours, which cut as a continuous line. What they saw as a horrible mistake, I thought looked really neat, and suggested they carefully glue the image outline to a backing sheet. They were hand cutting the background sheet, but it looks much more polished if they use the laser to cut the outline shape.

China to Crack Down on Taxpayer-Funded Overseas Ragers [Corruption]

The Chinese government today released a plan to end taxpayer-funded, booze-fueled sex parties in 2011, as well as official "seminars" held in Las Vegas and other cities that cost the country around $58 billion every year. That's some serious partying. More »

Zelda and Peach are a bit more outgoing in this new music video

While we find the promiscuous portrayal of Princess Peach and Zelda in this music video for "8-bit Ho" unfaithful to the real-life heroines, we're still compelled to give props: Patrick Donahue's rap is a catchy reflection on having your Heart Container broken.

Top New Year?s resolution searches for 2010: Will weight loss be on peoples? minds for 2011?

As 2010 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the year.  If you’re like us, it’s a time to say goodbye to old habits and start pulling together a list of New Year’s resolutions.

With that in mind, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the most popular New Year’s resolutions for Bing- comparing resolution searches made in January 2010 to November and December 2009.

Last year the most popular resolution was to lose weight, with double the weight-loss related searches landing in January, compared with November and December.  The most popular weight loss terms were:

  • Calories
  • Calorie counters
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

Fitness came in second last year, with about half as many users doing exercise-related searches as those looking specifically for diet and weight loss.  Many of the searches were for exercise and home gym equipment including treadmills, tread-climbers and Bowflex. .

The below data shows the percent increase for specific weight-related terms searched from November to December 2009.

New Year's Graph

These searches were four to five times more popular in January than in the two prior months. We also saw a 24% increase in people looking for classes of various kinds, from educational to recreational, in the month of January.

So as you reflect on 2010, here’s to starting 2011 off with a fresh start.

Happy New Year!

Uncharted 3 interview: The difference with Drake

Just what was that puzzling David O'Russell quote, referencing a "family dynamic" in the Uncharted movie, all about, I asked Uncharted 3 game director Justin Richmond at a recent press event. He laughed. "First of all, all that stuff was denied by David O. Russell," Richmond said. "He actually called us up and was like, 'I don't know what these guys are talking about.'" And Mark Wahlberg isn't anywhere near to being confirmed to play Nathan Drake either -- it's just Hollywood scuttlebutt, apparently. Still, I dutifully told Richmond that the Joystiq Biomass had chosen, and Nathan Fillion has our vote. Message received, Richmond responded.

With that important tidbit out of the way, we moved on to discussing the game: Uncharted 3 has the Cintamani Stone-sized task of living up to its predecessors, and Richmond and his team are busy implementing improvements across the board, subtle as they might appear. "The big thing is that we switched lighting engines between [Uncharted] 1 and 2, and we're keeping the same lighting engine now," he explained. "So we've already got all of those advancements. Now we're just refining them."

Two New DLC Chapters Coming to Castlevania HD in January

Konami has announced two new DLC chapters for the Xbox Live Arcade title Castlevania Harmony of Despair to be released in January according to the official Japanese site. Both stages are priced at 320 Microsoft points ($4 USD).

One of the stages (seen above, left) will be called "Do as many, become one" and will be based on the Catacombs area of Castlevania Symphony of the Night. As the name suggests, the boss will be the popular recurring foe Legion (a.k.a. Granfaloon, seen above, right), a massive sphere of corpses.

Edo-Style clock kit build

IMG_3230.JPG
What time is it? If you live in the North East, it's time to shovel! Then again, maybe it's time to stay inside and make something? I built the Gakken Edo-Style clock kit from the Maker Shed last week, so now I'll always know the time. The kit doesn't include English instructions, but it does come with an easy to follow "Ikea-like" illustrated step-by-step guide. I took some pictures during my build, and uploaded them to Make: Projects. They aren't meant to replace the included instructions, but I did include a few tips and tricks that I learned during my build.
