Angry Birds Board Game

Sometimes throughout the week, stories slip through the cracks. And sometimes a story is so insane/awesome/horrible that we can't help but want to comment on it, even if we have to invent a pretext to do so.

Well, here's our pretext. You got a problem with that? No? Oh, great then! So join us, dear reader, as we take a look at this week's collection of other news:

Presentation: Six Digital Trends to Watch

One of the best aspects of my job is that I get to learn from incredibly smart people. Working for Edelman is like playing for the Yankees. Richard Edelman has an approach to talent that in some ways resembles the late George Steinbrenner (not the Howie Spira side of George, but the good side). The firm consistently attracts all-stars to the team and puts them in a great position to succeed. The result is that every day I get to hit the field with pros like Mike Slaby or Richard Sambrook or Carol Cone - it's all very inspiring.

One of these people is David Armano - who I work very closely with - and we recently tag-teamed on this presentation on six trends to watch. For more head over to David's blog. As always, we're eager to hear your thoughts.

Runic hopeful Torchlight 2 will come to consoles

Runic Games' long-sought goal to port Torchlight to consoles will come to fruition when the game is released on Xbox Live Arcade as part of Microsoft's "House Party" promotion, beginning in mid-February. Depending on its success on the platform, Runic could look to quickly port the sequel to consoles, too, following its launch on PC this spring.

"That will hopefully get to the consoles, as well," Runic CEO Max Schaefer told MTV Multiplayer. "Depending on how [Torchlight on XBLA] does ... we're excited to get Torchlight 2 onto consoles. Hopefully sooner than how long [Torchlight on XBLA] took. We've gone through the exercise, we know what it takes."

Additionally, Schaefer priced Torchlight on XBLA at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), though a representative for the studio later said that that price was not official. "It will be set by Microsoft, not Runic Games," said the representative, "and we cannot confirm it."

Bing Feature Update: Get to know any city more quickly with new destination pages

Last week we told you about the natural language capabilities that make it faster to find and book flights in Bing.

Today we are releasing features that make it easier to research and plan trips to over 3000 cities across the world.

The new feature assembles all of the relevant information about a destination on one page so you can research a city before you go.   The top things you need to plan your trip - including flight information, a list of hotels in the area, popular attractions, local events, local news, civic photos, a map and a weather overview - are now in one place.

Click into each of the sections to see a full list or gallery relevant to the city.  If you’re searching for a local city, Bing can recognize that you’re close and serve up results accordingly.  Let’s say you’re thinking of travelling to Miami this winter.  Type Miami, FL into the search box, and click “Explore City” to check out the destination city.

  • 3000+ cities around the world.
  • Page content is contextual based on user location.
  • Rich content include events, news, images, videos, weather, flights, and hotels.

Wherever you’re headed, Bing’s new destination page is a great place to start!

A 2 in 1 New Year's Resolution

flickr/cc - elisfanclub
The most common resolution for the new year relates to body image. Either people want to exercise more, eat healthier or reduce weight (which is a mix of the two). Another top ten is to reduce debt or save money. Did you know you can put these two resolutions together?

There is a way to both reduce debt/save money while also changing your body and here are my suggestions on just how to do that with links to previous posts I have written on them.

Remove soda pop from your diet - Not only can you lose at-least 15 pounds over the course of a year, but you can save money on dental bills as well as the money that originally went towards buying soda. Some ways to reduce your intake:
1. Gradually drop in amount, cutting in half what you drink each 2-3 weeks.
2. Replace with carbonated water, tea or coffee
3. Drink a cup of water before you open a bottle of soda. You may not want it then.
4. Each time you want a bottle of soda, remind yourself of the negatives (money, health)

Reduce your portion sizes - This is one I am working on still. It is amazing how full you can get on 1/2 cup of ice cream if you eat it slow, knowing that the amount in front of you is all you get. The financial advantage to reduced portion sizes is that now that 2 pounds of Pot Roast can last you longer than 2 days and you don't feel you need to buy them as often, thus saving money on groceries.

Eating at home - Speaking of portion sizes, the plates of food given at most restaurants is amazingly large; we've all "rolled out" of our seats after eating too much. Staying home allows you to keep tabs on the amount of food you eat while saving money per plate. There are quite a few sites online where you can make the food at home that are offered in restaurants at a fraction of the cost. By googling {restaurant recipes} for a list of sites with copycat recipes, you can make your favorite dishes or breakfast platters.

Find free exercise options - From running stairs on your lunch break to parking the farthest at the grocery store to using the library or the internet for exercise ideas. Bodyweight exercises are considered one of the hot trends for this year and the awesome part of that means you don't needs any equipment except your body and what is already around your house!

If you enjoy the idea of getting out of the house there are some cheaper exercise options and then there is also the decision about whether gym membership is worth the cost. After going the free way and the cheaper way, I have found that paying money for a membership gets my fat ass to working out more often than going the cheap or free route, since I have nothing to lose. But to each their own.

Get sleep to save money - It helps you fight sickness, it keeps you less stressed, it reduces health-care costs and when you sleep you aren't eating and thus, you lose weight. Win, Win and Win! Best way to make yourself go to bed earlier - get a routine for yourself and set an alarm so you don't forget. If going to bed after the news is best for you, find a news program that is on an hour earlier so you can head to bed earlier.

Just remember that resolutions are a new start and will take time to kick in. Don't look at it as a restriction or diet but as a new lifestyle for yourself. In 10 years your future self can look back on today and be thankful that you are healthier and saved money in the process.

What ways can you think of to both reduce weight while saving money?

Google Instant Makes SEO Irrelevant

Google today launched an ambitious effort to speed up searching. But what they really did is kill SEO.

Google says:

"Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type."

The most important consideration for marketers or anyone who creates content, however, is in the bullets...

"Smarter Predictions: Even when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, predictions help guide your search. The top prediction is shown in grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need."

Here's what this means: no two people will see the same web. Once a single search would do the trick - and everyone saw the same results. That's what made search engine optimization work. Now, with this, everyone is going to start tweaking their searches in real-time. The reason this is a game changer is feedback. When you get feedback, you change your behaviors.

Think about it. When you push a door and it doesn't open quickly, you push harder. When you try to drive a car up a hill and it doesn't go as fast as you would like, you step on the gas. Feedback changes your behavior.

Google Instant means no one will see the same web anymore, making optimizing it virtually impossible. Real-time feedback will change and personalize people's search behaviors.

::LATER: Google is saying expect traffic fluctuations around organic keywords.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 Coming Feb 1 for $14.99

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

Following a slew of new downloadable releases announced by Microsoft last night, Capcom has now revealed at CES that Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 -- which is (follow us here) a sequel to the remake of the original Bionic Commando -- is set for release on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Arcade on February 1 and 2 respectively.

The game will come in at $14.99, or 1200 Microsoft points. Capcom also released a ton of new screenshots for the game, which you can see on their official Unity blog.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 is developed by FatShark, which is comprised of a number of former GRIN employees -- the developer responsible for the original Bionic Commando: Rearmed. And it does, in case you haven't heard (traditionalists may want to sit down for this) have a jump ability. This of course flies in the face of the design of the original Bionic Commando, which relied entirely on the grappling hook to traverse each level.
