Report: Marvel vs Capcom 3 cheekily punishes rage quitters

According to GamesRadar, Marvel vs Capcom 3 has a relatively unique solution to the problem of habitual online quitters. That is to say: People who quit online matches before they are over. That is to say: Rage quitters. Marvel vs Capcom 3 reportedly tracks players' quitting habits and can detect those who quit frequently. Said players will then be placed in a new matchmaking bracket -- one populated solely by other rage quitters.

In other words, quit all the time and you'll be paired with other players that quit all the time. Shoryuken notes that a similar system was implemented in Tatsunoko vs Capcom. We've contacted Capcom to confirm if such a system is indeed in place for MvC3. Assuming it's true, it's certainly a novel concept, though perhaps a terrifying one for those with unstable internet connections.

Math Monday: Scroll saw fractals

By George Hart for the Museum of Mathematics

Math_Monday_banner02_600px.jpg

With just a scroll saw, starting from a cube of wood, it is possible to make a family of complex, cube-based fractals.

scrollsaw-fractal-1.jpg

Once you've mastered the above, try the next level up in this family:

scrollsaw-fractal-2.jpg

Below is a face-on view, which shows the pattern that has to be cut three times to get the final object. You cut the same outline in the XY plane, the XZ plane, and the YZ plane.

Cory Poole showed me this technique, which I'd not seen before.

Random Robot Roundup

By popular demand, another robot news roundup is here. First up is news from our friend William Cox. You probably know William as the guy who spent the last decade maintaining the GoRobotics blog, which was recently acquired by Roboshop. His new project is RobotBox a community site for showing off robots you've built. Some other robot building friends of ours over at Willow Garage are celebrating the 3rd anniversary of ROS, one of the leading robot operating systems software packages (no doubt because it's released as open source to preserve the user's software freedoms). Lisa Devaney writes to tell us about a cool new educational program in UK schools that "aims to teach youth about the future workplace in 10-15 years time, demonstrating how robotics will influence career choices". It's called Robots and Avatars. And of course, The Swirling Brain swirls on, this week swirling up a Register story on CMU's flying robot jeep, a cnet story on Japan's new flying surveillance robot, a cake decorating robot, and an update on military exoskeletons. Know any other robot news, gossip, or amazing facts we should report? Send 'em our way please. And don't forget to follow us on twitter.

Gameloft boss defends company's clones

Cloning is a hot-button topic, the ethics of which continue to be explored by legislatures, theologians and George Lucas. In the games world, one company is at the forefront of the science: Gameloft. Its experiments -- including the recent Shadow Guardian, a facsimile of Uncharted 2 -- have been praised by some and reviled by others. Gameloft CEO Michel Guillemot says that's okay (and the sales numbers would agree).

"The video game industry has always played around a limited number of themes," Guillemot proposed in an interview with IGN. "There is maybe one new idea a year." He further addressed Gameloft's detractors by saying, "The damaging thing is if you do a bad expression of a good idea." Hmmm ... We wonder if Guillemot was thinking about Capcom's MaXplosion when he said that.

Black Friday for Robot Builders

Thanksgiving is the time when all robots give thanks for Black Friday sales on components needed to make more robots. We want to do our part to help you bring more robots into the world, so here's a list of the best places to get your Black Friday robot bargains in 2010. Like last year Pololu is offering some of the best Black Friday deals around:

Starting this Thursday, November 25th, 2010, Pololu is offering huge discounts (up to 60% off) off selected products, including the Pololu 3pi Robot, Maestro Servo Controllers, Simple Motor Controllers, sensors, and more!

Electronic Goldmine is offering $10 off any order of $60 or more if you use coupon code 60NOV2010 during checkout. Tower Hobbies is offering a $30 discount on orders of $199 or more. BGMicro has a whole page of cool, discounted electronics for their Thanksgiving Specials, and don't miss their Virtual Sidewalk Sale. HobbyPartz has a long list of discounts on servos, motors, LiPo gear, and more on their Black Friday Super Special page. If you're up for braving the 3am crowd of frenzied shoppers at the meatspace Black Friday sales, you can pick up a Roomba 400 at Kohl's for $99. And in New York, you'll be able to pick up all sorts of Open Source hardware kits at the new MakerBot Botcave store, which opens for the first time on Nov 26.

Update: Trossen has added a Black Friday Sale. Alex from Trossen Robotics writes, We’ve had our heads buried with developing a new product line and forgot that Black Friday and Cyber Monday is this weekend, lol. We just blogged about a quick sale we put together. Customers get 10% off their entire order by entering “cyber10” in the coupon code section during checkout.

Update 2: While I was home stuffing myself with Turkey and dressing, Barry from Robot Add-ons emailed to let us know you can get 15% off Roomba parts and accessories by using the code "robotnet15off" during checkout at Robot Add-Ons. There's still time left to get some Cyber Monday bargains.

What Dirt Does Wikileaks Have on Rupert Murdoch? [Moguls]

Julian Assange says he has loads of cables on Rupert Murdoch and Murdoch's News Corporation that will be automatically released if he meets an early demise. It's nice to see that the Wikileaks founder hasn't lost his melodramatic touch. More »
