Mad Catz to produce wireless 360 headphones for Microsoft

Mad Catz has announced that it's partnering with Microsoft to produce the first "wireless, licensed and co-branded headphones" for the Xbox 360. The headphones will be manufactured under the Tritton brand and will come in both stereo and Dolby 5.1 varieties. They should hit the shelves in time for the 2011 holiday season.

The press release is short on other details, though hopefully the headphones will pack Microsoft's proprietary wireless tech, allowing them to circumvent the cumbersome setup required by Tritton's current 360 compatible headsets. Like, if the new headsets don't have two AC adapters, that would be great.

Every Famous British Person to Sue Tabloid Over Phone Hacking [Scandals]

It's become fairly apparent that Rupert Murdoch's UK tabloid News of the World used to hack into people's phones on a regular basis in order to get stories. But nobody wants to take the blame! Instead, we get endless lawsuits. More »

Dragon Age 2 PC DRM detailed, no disc check or install limit

Curious about the inconvenience factor of the PC version of Dragon Age 2's DRM? BioWare community coordinator Chris Priestly has explained the game's anti-piracy measures on the developer's forums: The Steam version of the game will only use the basic Steam DRM tools, while the box-copy edition of the game will make use of two (relatively) non-obtrusive methods to keep adventurers on the straight and narrow.

The first method is a "Release Control," which locks down the game until its official release date in the user's territory. The second is a more permanent DRM method -- though it doesn't require a disc check or limit the number of installations that can be made from a single copy of the game. After registering the game during installation, players can play on up to five different PCs within 24 hours. They can even play offline, though the game will need to make online checks at certain (heretofore undecided) intervals.

Also, before you're able to play the game, you have to drink from a pewter goblet of Darkspawn blood. There's a pretty good chance that this test will kill you. But hey -- no disc checks! That's pretty sweet, right?

Russell still writing Uncharted flick, talks picks for Elena

The push-and-pull saga of the Uncharted film adaptation continues, as David O. Russell has informed Empire Online that he's still working on the script (despite reports to the contrary). He also reaffirmed that he wants both Mark Wahlberg and Robert De Niro to star in the film. Speaking of the film's female roles, Russell noted that he has "cultivated" the character of Elena "quite a bit." Said Russell, "I love the woman characters and the more robust they are, the more robust the movie."

When asked if Amy Adams would fit the role, Russell stated that he would "love" her in the part (Adams recently worked with Russell on The Fighter). Another name mentioned by Russell: One Scarlett Johansson. Of course, Russell seems to be overlooking the obvious. One word: Streep. Come on David, she's box office gold!

MAKE chosen as #1 education site by UK Telegraph

There are a wealth of websites that assist and promote outside the classroom Photo: PA We've been having quite a day. Sony's 'Move Server' project potentially bringing Move to PCs, revealed at GDC

If you're looking to do something more with your PlayStation Move on a PC than, say, change the color of the controller's bulb, you'll be interested to know that Sony's giving a presentation at GDC 2011 on the "Move Server" project -- a project said to allow "academics and hobbyists to develop software using the PlayStation Move controller on their own PCs." The speech will be held on Wednesday, March 2, and lead by senior developer support engineer John McCutchan of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Sony's "Move Server" project has yet to be announced by the company, but the GDC session listing certainly seems to spell out its intention of bringing Move functionality to PCs everywhere -- we've reached out to Sony for official comment all the same. Regardless, we'll assuredly find out more at SCEA's GDC session early next month.

DRV8811 Stepper Driver Design Notes

Need to control some stepper motors? The TI DRV8811 bipolar stepper motor driver is a simple solution but it poses an interesting problem - how do you decide what values to use for the passive components? In a recent blog post Jose Quinones of the Dallas Personal Robotics Group explains the problem:

Selecting these components is not a trivial endeavor. Make them too big and your switching frequency is too slow, with a high pitch squaling noise making your life miserable. Make them too small, and the switching losses increase, removing total power dissipation capability from the H Bridge’s power FETs. We need to match these values as close as possible to the optimal set of parameters in order to maximize our output.

Fortunately, Jose's blog post goes on to provide some helpful notes on selecting the R C values you'll need. He explains in detail how the current regulation engine works and how to compute the TBLANK and ITRIP parameters. He's got plenty of schematics and diagrams too. Jose should know what he's talking about because he's designed a stepper controller based on the DRV8811.

Stolen Egyptian Artifacts 'Left in the Street' [Good News]

Looks like Egypt's ancient artifacts will survive the uprising relatively unscathed: Not only are civilians detaining would-be looters, but 288 items stolen from a storage site were "left in the street" after antiquities chief Zahi Hawass asked for their return. More »
